In a bold move bridging fine jewelry and contemporary art, Van Cleef & Arpels has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with celebrated artist James Turrell. Known for his immersive light installations, Turrell brings his visionary approach to the maison’s latest limited-edition collection, “Luminous Horizons.” This partnership marks the first time Van Cleef & Arpels has worked with an artist of Turrell’s caliber to create wearable art pieces that challenge traditional jewelry design.
The collection comprises 12 one-of-a-kind pieces, each interpreting Turrell’s signature interplay of light and space through gemstones and precious metals. A standout creation is a brooch that mimics Turrell’s “Skyspace” installations, featuring a concave disc of Australian opal that appears to change color depending on the angle of light. Another extraordinary piece is a ring with a hidden LED mechanism that casts an ethereal glow through a lattice of diamonds, creating an illusion of depth and movement.
Turrell, who rarely engages in commercial collaborations, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. “Jewelry, like my art, is about perception and transformation,” he said. “Working with Van Cleef & Arpels allowed me to explore how light interacts with gemstones in ways I hadn’t imagined before.” The maison’s craftsmen spent over two years developing proprietary techniques to achieve Turrell’s desired effects, including custom-cut gemstones and innovative light-reflecting settings.
The “Luminous Horizons” collection will be unveiled at an exclusive event during Art Basel Miami, followed by a global tour. Given Turrell’s cult following and Van Cleef & Arpels’ prestige, the pieces are expected to attract both art collectors and jewelry connoisseurs. Prices for the collection range from $500,000 to several million dollars, with proceeds benefiting Turrell’s Roden Crater project, an ambitious land art installation in Arizona.
