Shanghai has taken a major step toward becoming a global leader in jewelry and fashion with the opening of the Shanghai International Jewelry Fashion Functional Zone. The launch event took place on May 16 at the Fosun Foundation in the city’s Huangpu district.

The ceremony welcomed government officials, industry leaders, and academic representatives. Among the speakers was Liu Ping, deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. Liu emphasized Shanghai’s importance as China’s top market for gold and jewelry, highlighting its strong consumer demand and creative retail environments.

“Shanghai’s strong consumption power and innovative shopping experiences make it the top choice for global brands entering China,” Liu said.

Gaetano Cavalieri, president of the World Jewelry Confederation, also spoke at the event. He praised the new functional zone and its potential to fuel both local and global economic growth in the jewelry and fashion sectors.

As part of the launch, officials revealed a three-year development plan with 24 strategic goals across six focus areas. These include building a central hub for jewelry resources, supporting new brands and designers, and encouraging innovation throughout the industry.

The initiative signals Shanghai’s commitment to developing a vibrant, world-class fashion and jewelry scene, focused on creativity, talent development, and international collaboration.
